Sidetracked
Well, my planned schedule for getting into the formal Badwater Ultra this year, and perhaps next year took a bad turn. I have the qualifications, just not the "official" races to show it. My hope to begin correcting that was to get in a good 110+ miles at the San Diego 1 Day. I was a ready as I have ever been. But, my SO's father died unexpectedly two days before. I had to withdraw from the race and fly across the country to support her through this. Life happens. Sometimes it just stops, too.
I'm trying to get my head around what to do. Badwater has been driving me for years. I have secured recommendations from some rather significant names to present to the race committee. I know I have what it takes. I need to be able to demonstrate it for the committee. My work travel schedule has gotten in the way too many times, and now just some really unfortunate timing.
As well -- I will get the job done. I guess I just wanted to vent a little.
If I cannot get in through the formal channels, I will go it independently. Ultimately, it does not matter. It is doing the thing, not the race that matters to me. However, it does not hurt to have the support of the race organization present (if only at great distances) as some kind of back up.

Pirate,
I'm in a similar boat. All we can do is the best we can do. If we get in great! If not, then there's the unofficial crossing.
So, can I expect to see you at the Barkley in 06? 8)
You can run with the big dogs, or you can sit on the porch and bark.
Hi Liam -- Thanks for the reply. Life is what it is, and no amount of our wanting it to do otherwise will help. We just need to work with what we have.
Barkley!? Interesting. We could become a roving band of ultrarunners with a bad attitude running races unofficially - on our own timescale and against all rules. Ya know, that sounds pretty darn good. :D 8)

FWIW...
I ran an unofficial Badwater last July and did just fine, but I still don't meet the minimum qualifications for the official race. Ability to complete the course (even in a respectable time) and qualifying are two totally different issues, in my opinion.
I wouldn't see it as "sidetracked". It's just a different path.

Hi Marcia -- Your point is well taken. Thanks very much. This is a trek I will take. The solo path is one possible way that I am very much considering. Indeed, some of those from whom I am getting advise and encouragement have done just that, and even did so prior to there being an official race.
Pirate,
Your in AZ right?

Liam, Sorry to be slow replying. I was out running
I am currently living in S. CA near Los Angeles, very near the finish of the Angeles Crest 100 :D .
I did live in Tucson for many years. That is when I got to know some of the runners you might be thinking about.

What I'm wondering is, if your the Robert I met and got to know a little at Barkley and pacing at Badwater? Did you pace the legendary Mike Tildon at Badwater?

Liam (Polar Bear),
I am the one you met at Frozen Head on the fool's weekend this year (and who paced Jim last year and Mike this year at BW) I Hope to see you in both F.H., TN and D.V., CA in '06. I am also hoping to be at HR this year, though I'm nowhere near as tough as Joe to enter (and finish) both HR and BW in the same year!
Cheers,
Robert

Hi there Robert! Sorry for the confusion guys. For some reason I thought you told me you went by the handle Pirate on-line.
Wow! Hardrock. Go for it guy.

Liam -- I was pacing/crewing at Badwater this year, too. But, we did not connect because I got delayed by a traffic accident on the highway. We discussed the race and the "controversy" on the RW forum. Does that help place me?
Yep Pirate! Now I'm starting to get it. Thanks!
