I've heard the asphalt temp actually MELTS shoes and running on the white line provides some relief? How hot does that road get and are there shoes designed to handle the heat better than others? If so, which models?

I wore some Brooks something or another. I was going so fast that my feet were barely on the pavement  and didn't have a chance to melt.

LOL! Well, I'm sure THAT wasn't what kept my shoes from melting.
I'm pretty much snail-pace all the way. But my shoes have never melted.
I have noticed, though, that the white line FEELS cooler.

I am not a shoe expert but I have run hundreds of miles with shoes doing ultra's, triathlons, etc.. I would suggest you go to a local running store where they specialize in fitting your foot for the event and type of gait you have. It usually isnt so much the brand, it is the fit and what you are going to use them for, trails, pavement, 5k's Ultra's, triathlons etc.
