Roster for the 2007 Badwater Solo
Hugh Murphy's "InyoUltra" website is no longer covering the Solo efforts, so we will create a page for that here, in the near future. It will contain the 2007 Solo roster, results from the 2005 and 2006 Solo Crossings, and other pertinent information. Meanwhile, I'll just post the 2007 roster here. Please let me know if there are any changes.

Hi Marcia,
Thanks for informing us.
Will Hugh still be involved in the solos? Was looking forward to meeting him.
Happy Trails,
Connie

I can't say for sure what Hugh's involvement will be. Nothing "official," I think, but I imagine he will be around at some point.

Marcia, thanks for the info, it is interesting to see how many people are already commited to the Solo this year. Although I have known about the race for many years, I have never really followed up on the details until last year. I am usually all or nothing and knowing that following the race any closer would only make me want to try it all the more. So I had to wait until a point where I could realistically think about trying it before I invested time into it. So that being said I have some questions that might seem naive but bare with me. I could probably look up some of the answers but for the sake of communicating with my Badwater friends I will ask instead.
How many people usually attempt the solo every year on average? Are most solo attempts made in groups? I think making the attempt is groups like the July 1st one is really neat. Are there any issues with law inforcement going up Whitney do they need to be notified of your plans?
If I don't make the list in 2008 then I will be attempting a solo next year. So I am sure I will have other questions. Keep us posted on any new entrants. Good job Marcia Thanks.

Hi Steve,
We had 10 people in 2006. Almost all started at the same time (July 1). Seems like there were one or two who started earlier/later the same morning, but I can't remember exactly.
In 2005, I think there were a total of 12, but two DNF'd. I think there were six or seven starting together, but I'm not sure when the others started. Don't have all the stats in front of me right now. There's a "master list" of ALL the Badwater to Whitney crossings, and I will eventually have that up on this website.
It seems that in the past two years, there has been more of a trend toward running it in groups. You have to realize, though, that the runners are still very spread out on the course. But it's fun to start together, and meet up again in Lone Pine after everyone's done. It's fun being out there with friends, even if you don't see them much while you're out on the road.
If you plan to continue past Whitney Portal to the summit, you MUST have a permit from Inyo National Forest. As long as you have a permit and obey their rules, there are no problems. If you do not get a permit, you are likely to be cited and fined. The Forest Service DOES patrol the trail.
It's an important distinction that we all function as individuals out there. Even though many of us may be out there at the same time, we do NOT function as any sort of group. It's your responsibility to make sure you know all the rules and follow them. (You probably know this, Steve, but I thought it was important to mention here.)

Marcia and Steve,
What I remember from the 2005 BW solo -- 5 started on Saturday, July 2nd, 6 of us started on Monday, July 4th, and a 12th runner did the solo in August. We follow all the same rules of the "official race". I had applied to the official BW that year and didn't get in. Running the solo was the greatest experience.
Juli
Marcia and Juli,
Thanks for the info on the solos , sorry I hadn't responded sooner but my job has kept me so busy lately its all I can do to keep up with work and training. I am also a volunteer captain with this years 2007 Arizona Ironman. Needless to say I have 30 hour agenda's with 24 hour days. I promised my self I would wake up early Sunday morning and treat my self to this website to see what the latest is. I will do my training a little later today.
That is neat to hear that everyone meets at Lone pine at the end of the Solo that gives everyone a chance to swamp stories and socialize.
How much further is it to the summit from the portal?

About 11 miles. And then, of course, 11 miles back down ;D
