Pacer for 2006 Badwater!!
Hello,
I'm interested in pacing and crewing a runner for Badwater 2006. I'm a healthy 34 year old Firefighter from the Midwest, Iowa to be exact. But, don't let the flat land and rows of corn fool you though, we grow'em (runners) here like everywhere else!! :)
Running is my passion and I would love to help motivate and encourage someone along the way, in route, to achieving the extreme goal of finishing Badwater.
I realize that trying to select someone for pacing simply by reading a post is ridiculous, so, feel free to contact me via email first.
My home email is; bryan_and_amanda@mchsi.com ....there are underscores on both sides of the word "and", you just can't see them!
Let me know if you're interested or if you would just like to know a little more about me!
Watch the shoulders, I'll be wandering the highways waiting for a response!
Thank you,
Bryan in Iowa.....
Hey Folks,
Summer is just around the corner, who wants to go runnin, er, at least runnin in some warmer weather, we never really quit running, the logistics and clothing just seems to change about every 3 to 4 months here!
It hasn't been a bad winter here in Iowa at all, in fact, it has been a very mild one to say the least.
I'm still looking to crew/pace for 2006, I just need a runner/crew that'll have me.
Anyways, back to the shoulders, see you there!! Hey, I'll race you to the next town....wanna?
Thanks,
S-Back.....

Do you have any exposure to heat training?
I live 4 hours from Badwater. All summer long we go out and train myself and my crew. If we can't go to Badwater we go to the low desert area around Palm Springs. We get some pretty nasty wind storm training in. Sand has blown soo bad sometimes my crew did not want to get out at the stops. I think going to Badwater in the summer is the only way anybody can prepare for Death Valley.
Greg,
This is a tough one for a comfy, cozy Midwestern boy!
I don't have the luxury of being able to train in Badwater, which would be the most ideal training scenario. I also don't live in a region that is condusive of having desert like condtions for me to do so year round.
What I do have here though is a wide range of weather. Extreme cold and heat at different times of the year, snow, rain, sleet, hail, tornadoes. All normal weather, fall, spring, summer, sunny days, overcast days, anything.
It's obvious that I can't go out and run in the heat year round. In Iowa, we do get high, humid heat, usually July and August. I would say that the temps in those months usually runs from 90-100 everyday with very high humidity everyday. Often 100+temps. Do I run and train through July/August, yes! Do I run year round, yes. Heat or no heat, cold or no cold, yes. A 2, 5, 10, 20, 30 mile day doesn't matter just like the temp doesn't matter. I train regularly in a sauna at the Rec in addition to my road time.
So basically, I train in all weather, all temps, all conditions. I think that in it's self makes me a more rounded runner. The last run I did was 3 weeks ago, a hilly 50k in Kansas City. It was 16 degrees and snowing. I'm also a Union Firefighter here in Des Moines, have been for 7 years. Heat exposure is the norm with what I do. Hey, it's August and 100 degrees outside, lets throw our 75 pound bunker gear and air pack on and run into this burning building for an hour....Lol! I would say that ones ability to endure through a very hot or very cold environment, would help in some way as to handle the other proportionately. Especially if one trained in all varieties of weather yearly. It's kind of like the physical and mental capabilities of people, you can be physically fit, but if you're not mentally prepared, your performance may not excell.
While all of my training and mental preparation can't possibly ready me "totally" for BW, I mean, I've never been there, how can I say I'm prepared and ready? It does though give me the foundation. You said it," I think going to Badwater in the summer is the only way anybody can prepare for Death Valley", yes, I agree.
Run me through the desert, run me across the plains of Nebraska, run me over the mountains in Colorado, just run me!! I have the ability!
Wow, I made a real long answer to an 8 word question!
Let me know what you think Greg. If you have any other questions, hit me up on here or feel free to email me at home
Take care!

I thought running, was running. On a normal twenty mile run I would consume 64 oz. of fluid and know I was a little low on my fluid intake.
About 20 oz. of fluid on a five mile run if I wanted to run faster. In Death Valley I need 16 oz. per mile. I have trained my body to prcess a larger amount of fluid in the extreme heat. I think that training your body to process that volume of fluid is my only way to survive the heat. Remember they call it a DRY HEAT and it starts miles away, and lasts for days .Good luck with your running. 8)
