Badwater Attire Alternative
I spent all the money to outfit myself in the Sun Precautions attire to discover that the garments felt too stiff... too hot... too heavy... and didn't vent enough for my needs (thank goodness for several early summer training weekends in DV).
I finally improvised my own race attire. Went to K-Mart and purchased 2 pairs of light cotton (male) pajama bottoms and two inexpensive mens light cotton long-sleeve dress shirts.
I carefully undid the crotch seam on the bottoms (front to back) which left the crotch slit open, allowing me to wear cotton undies and excuse the description... pull the crotch open, pull the undies aside and pee standing up... awesome!
I cropped the shirts at the waist which allowed air circulation. The shirts were extremely functional... I could unbutton as needed to allow air cooling. Another neat aspect of the shirts was that I could button the cuff, stick my thumb through the hole and the shirt cuff protected my hand from sunburn. The lightweight fabric of these materials was extremely cool when sprayed.
I found the materials to provide surprisingly. good protection against the sun. I only applied sun block twice... one before the race and on the morning of day 2.
Thanks for mentioning the use of cotton shirts. For me it has been a battle tested anti-sunburn solution for many summer vacations (that is before I started running and actually had time and money to go on a real vacation). It really does work!
